Apply for Canada Greener Home Grant program

The Canada Greener Homes Initiative provides grants and a loan for EnerGuide evaluations and for retrofits. It is important that you read all eligibility criteria and grant requirements to be sure that you will qualify for the grant at the end of the process.

You must complete a pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation before beginning the retrofits to be eligible for the grant.

Step 1. Apply

Learn about how the grant process works, and ensure you meet all the eligibility criteria for the grant before you apply. Select our service organization to conduct the EnerGuide evaluation, and submit your application through the Canada Greener Homes Grant portal.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Only one homeowner per home can register
  • Prove ownership of the property (Municipal property tax documents)
  • Prove its your primary residence (Government issued photo ID with matching address, such as driver’s license)

Step 2A. Pre-retrofit EnerGuide home evaluation

This is a mandatory step before you start your retrofits. Contact us to book your Pre-retrofit Energy Evaluation
An energy advisor registered with Natural Resources Canada performs the pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation, measures the energy efficiency of your home and provide you with the required report package.

Enerma - Canada Greener Homes Grant- Step 2B. (optional) Interest-free loan

Interest-free loans of up to $40,000, with a repayment term of 10 years to help you undertake major home retrofits

Once you have received your pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation and decided which retrofits you would like to do, you can apply for a loan. The loan will help cover the cost of retrofits that are both eligible and recommended by your energy advisor.

To apply for the loan, you must provide at least one cost estimate for the retrofits.

You are not eligible for a loan if you have already started or completed the retrofits.

Note: You will receive the loan only after the completed work has been verified through a post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation.

Step 3. Retrofit your home

After the pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation is complete, you will need to review the recommendations and decide which retrofits work best for your budget and renovation plans.

Step 4. Post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation

This is a mandatory step after you finish your retrofits. Contact us to book your Post-retrofit Energy Evaluation

You must book a post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation, and submit the required documents online or by mail. Once the post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation is complete, your new EnerGuide label will show you how much more energy-efficient your home has become.

 

Step 5. Request and receive your grant

You will receive an email asking you to confirm your total grant amount, which will help you cover part of your retrofits cost. After you confirm, you will receive a cheque for the grant by mail within the 30 business days.

Apply for CleanBC Better Home Rebates and Special Offers

The CleanBC Better Homes and Home Renovation Rebate Programs, administered by BC HydroFortisBC and the Province of BC, provides rebates for improving your home’s energy efficiency through select upgrades.

In order to qualify for this rebate, all of the eligibility requirements must be met. Please read them carefully. Contact us if you have any questions.

Step 1. Confirm your eligibility

Learn about how the rebate process works, and ensure you meet all the eligibility criteria for the rebates before you apply.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • The home must be a year-round primary residence that is at least 12 months old.
  • You must have a residential utility account with FortisBC, BC Hydro, or a municipal utility
  • The home must be one of the following types:
    • Single family home (detached dwelling)
    • Secondary suite in a single-family home (detached dwelling), with its own separate utility meter
    • Mobile home that is permanently fixed, sits on a foundation and is structurally complete with installed and connected plumbing, heating, electrical, water and sewer services; towing apparatus and axle must be removed
    • Duplex, triplex, row home or townhome, where each unit has its own natural gas and/or electricity meter; utility accounts must be in the name of the resident and/or homeowner.  Utility accounts in the name of a strata corporation are not eligible.
  • Your home must be primarily heated with:
    • Natural Gas or piped-propane supplied by FortisBC
    • Natural Gas supplied by Pacific Northern Gas
    • Electricity supplied by FortisBC, BC Hydro, or a municipal utility
    • Oil or propane not supplied by FortisBC
    • Wood or other solid fuels

Step 2. Retrofit your home

Purchase the eligible retrofit items and have them installed by a licensed contractor.

Step 3. Apply for rebates

Once your upgrades are installed, search for the implemented retrofits and complete the online applications and upload all supporting documentation including copies of all receipts and invoices. See sample invoices.

Deadline: The application must be submitted within 6 months of the invoice date of the upgrade.

Step 4. Apply for bonus and special offers

The Two Upgrade Bonus is a $300 bonus rebate for installing two or more eligible energy efficiency upgrades. 

The Home Energy Improvement Bonus rebate provides $750 to $2,000 for installing three or more eligible energy efficiency upgrades between your pre- and post-upgrade EnerGuide home evaluations. Receive $20 for every percentage you reduce your EnerGuide rating (Gigajoule/ year) between your pre- and post-upgrade EnerGuide home evaluations.

The CleanBC Income Qualified Program is a special offer to provide a rebate of up to $33,900 to cover 60–95% of your home upgrade costs.

Rebate coverage is based on the combined income of all adults in your home and how many people live in your home, including adults and children.

  • Combined incomes less than Income Level 1 are eligible for up to 95% of upgrade costs.
  • Combined incomes less than Income Level 2 are eligible for up to 60% of upgrade costs.

Note: CleanBC Income Qualified Program rebates cannot be combined with rebates from the CleanBC Better Homes and Home Renovation Rebate Program or other provincial or utility offers for the same upgrade.

This incentive is for Indigenous Communities installing heat pumps. The Province of BC offers up to $12,000 for residential homes OR up to $200,000 for community buildings installing heat pumps

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) Eco Plus Program offers up to 25% insurance premium refund to homeowners who purchase climate friendly housing. This program was formally called the CMHC Green Home Program.

Deadline: Application must be submitted within 24 months of the closing date of the mortgage.

The Sagen Energy Efficient Housing Program provides up to a 25% Mortgage Insurance Premium refund when you make energy-efficient improvements to your home.

Deadline: Application must be submitted within 24 months of the closing date of the mortgage.

Through the Federal and Provincial Government GST/HST New Housing Rebate Program, you may be eligible to receive a new housing rebate for some of the GST/HST paid for substantially renovated residential homes.

Deadline: You must keep all applicable forms and supporting documentation for a period of 6 years after the rebate is administered.

A growing number of local governments in BC are offering top-up rebates (municipal top-ups) to the CleanBC Better Homes and Home Renovation Rebate Program. 

Limited time offer – Act now, as municipal top-up rebates will be approved on a first come first serve basis.

How to apply

There is no additional application required for the municipal top-up offers. Your eligibility is automatically assessed when you submit a CleanBC Better Homes and Home Renovation Rebate application for the applicable rebates.
